What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers, also called soft tissue fillers are injectable drugs that can smooth facial lines and wrinkles. These gel-like substances are injected underneath the skin by a needle to change the appearance.

This minimally invasive treatment can also enhance shallow facial contours, achieving fuller lips, or restore fuller cheeks.

Your doctor will discuss your expectations and determine what filler would be the best choice of fillers.

What are the different types of injectable fillers?*

What happens during the dermal filler procedure?

A dermal filler procedure includes the following steps:

During a pre-treatment consultation, you will be asked about your expectations for the result, your medical history reviewed and a course of treatment recommended.

Your skin tone, appearance and face will be examined.

The points will be made on your face as a mark for the injection site.

The injection sites will also be cleansed with an antibacterial agent to make more sensitive patients comfortable.

Anaesthetising will be done by using a cold instrument to chill the skin, inject local anaesthesia, or ointment to numb the skin. The filler itself may also contain an anaesthetic agent to eliminate pain.

Injection usually takes only a few moments per site. The process includes injecting, massaging, and evaluating the result is performed, and additional filler added as needed.

Once finished with the process the marks will wipe off as well.

How do I prepare for dermal fillers?

Preparation for dermal fillers includes:

Telling your doctor about your medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments as well as prescription and herbal medicines and vitamins

Smoking cessation – as smoking impacts the body’s healing ability

Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-ageing” products.

Ten days before the procedure, stop all NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) such as aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Nuprin, Bufferin, Ibuprofen, etc. Paracetamol is OK to use.

Ten days before the procedure, stop all herbal supplements such as fish oil, ginkgo, ginseng and St John’s Wort

Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.

What are the side effects of dermal fillers?

Possible risks and complications of injectable fillers include:

Bruising, swelling, bleeding, slight pain

An infection reaction at the injection site
Acne-like skin eruptions
Antibodies to filler material may reduce the effectiveness of future injections
Noticeable lumps, bumps, or nodules
Discolouration or change in pigmentation
Skin redness, sensitivity, itching, rash
Scarring on face
Under or over correction of wrinkles
Blurred vision, partial vision loss, or even blindness if the dermal filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel
The allergic reaction may lead to anaphylactic shock that needs emergency help

What is the difference between BOTOX ® and fillers?*

Toxin

Toxin freezes muscles to stop creases and wrinkles caused by smiling, squinting, frowning, and other facial expressions.
Typically toxins treats the area in the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes.
Toxin results can last 3 to 4 months

Dermal Fillers

These use substances to fill in or plump areas that have lost volume and smoothness.
Fillers treat the areas that include wrinkles around the mouth, thin lips, and cheeks that have lost fullness and the nasial labial folds.
Dermal filler results vary, depending on the used filler.
